Bob Owen - "Desert Spirit"
This is another outstanding cue from Bob Owen, built around the rich, unmistakable color of Brazilian Purpleheart. The deep reddish-purple tone gives the cue a warm and luxurious foundation, while the long, razor-sharp Ebony points create the strong traditional structure Bob’s cues are known for. The addition of Turquoise, Super Tusk, and fine silver brings a completely different personality to the cue, adding vibrant color and intricate detail without overwhelming the classic design.
What really catches my attention is the way Bob uses the Turquoise and fine silver throughout the cue. The bright blue turquoise immediately jumps against the dark Ebony and Brazilian Purpleheart, while the delicate silver work gives the inlays a jewelry-like quality. The flowing design in the butt sleeve feels almost Southwestern in character, with the combination of turquoise, silver, black, and white creating something that looks more like a piece of handcrafted jewelry than a traditional cue inlay.
The details continue all the way through the ringwork, where Paua Abalone Hearts add flashes of color that change beautifully under different light. Combined with the Super Tusk accents and black Lizard Wrap, there is a lot happening in this cue, yet everything remains remarkably balanced. That is something Bob Owen does extremely well—taking multiple exotic materials and intricate design elements and making them feel like they naturally belong together.
I’ve always felt that Bob Owen is one of the most underrated cue makers out there, and two things I especially love about his work are his designs and playability. Bob has a very recognizable way of combining traditional cue-making elements with his own creative ideas, and his cues always seem to have character without being overdone. More importantly, they are not just beautiful cues made for a display case—they are serious players.
