Eddie Cohen - Wrapless
Here is another masterpiece from California cue maker Eddie Cohen, showcasing the kind of refined creativity and precision that have made his work increasingly admired among collectors and serious players. Built from richly figured Kingwood in both the forearm and butt sleeve, this striking 12-point cue features six razor-sharp forward points and six reverse points flowing seamlessly through a wrapless Gabon ebony handle. The contrast between the warm reddish-brown Kingwood and the deep black ebony creates a sophisticated and timeless appearance, while the overall execution gives the cue an unmistakably high-end presence. Like many of Eddie’s best designs, the cue feels traditional at first glance, yet reveals more complexity, balance, and artistic detail the longer you study it.
Kingwood itself carries a fascinating history. As a member of the rosewood family, only the densest, strongest, and most stable cuts were considered worthy of being called “Kingwood.” The name traces back to the reigns of King Louis XIV and Louis XV of France, when this luxurious material was reserved almost exclusively for the finest royal furniture and decorative works made for the French monarchy. Even today, Kingwood remains one of the most respected and sought-after woods in fine woodworking and custom cue making, prized not only for its beauty, but also for its rarity, stability, and elegant natural color. And most importantly, they hit good when they are being used in custom cues.
As always with Eddie’s work, the ring work and inlay designs are both creative and thoughtfully executed. The inlays throughout the cue appear inspired by the elegant hands of antique grandfather clocks, giving the cue a refined old-world character while still feeling modern and original. The ring work is especially interesting, featuring alternating hollow Juma circles and solid silver rings that create subtle rhythm and contrast throughout the cue. These details may seem understated from a distance, but together they become the finishing touch that truly brings the entire design to life — the kind of thoughtful artistry that continues to separate Eddie Cohen’s work from many others in the new generation of custom cue makers.
