Mike Durbin - Fancy 4ptr
This cue was clearly built with playability in mind first. Constructed from highly figured Pomelle Bubinga with ebony points both up and down, the cue has a very solid, dense feel in hand with excellent natural balance throughout the stroke.
The combination of the 3/8x11 titanium pin and Mike’s handmade low-deflection shafts gives the cue a firm, responsive hit with a lot of feedback without feeling overly stiff. The cue feels extremely stable through the cue ball, especially on power shots, while still maintaining a smooth and controlled touch on finesse shots.
One thing that genuinely surprised me is how good Mike’s handmade LD shafts actually play. I personally own a Michael Durbin cue with his LD shaft setup, and the hit is incredibly solid and natural compared to many modern low-deflection shafts on the market today. They reduce deflection very effectively while still keeping that traditional wood-shaft feel and feedback that many players do not want to lose.
Another thing worth mentioning is that Mike still builds his cues completely by hand and does not use CNC machinery in his cue-making process. That traditional hands-on approach really shows in the overall feel of his cues, especially for players who appreciate a more classic custom cue hit and character.
Visually, the silver veneers, silver rings, and silver inlay work give the cue a bold, classic custom cue appearance with a lot of presence under light. Combined with the matching joint protectors, the overall package feels very complete and player-oriented.
This is the kind of cue serious players tend to appreciate more the longer they use it — solid hit, strong feedback, and very confidence inspiring at the table.
