PFD - Ebony/Tulipwood Wrapless

Built by Hall of Fame cue maker Paul F. Drexler, this PFD cue is a perfect example of understated elegance backed by thoughtful engineering and playability. At first glance, the design feels clean and minimal, but the longer you study it, the more refined details begin to reveal themselves.

The deep Gabon Ebony forearm gives the cue a timeless, almost piano-black appearance, contrasted beautifully by the warm Tulipwood wrapless handle. The Tulipwood section carries natural ribbon-like grain movement that adds just enough visual character without disrupting the cue’s clean overall presentation. The balance between the dark ebony and the warmer tones of the handle gives the cue a very classic American look while still feeling distinctly PFD in execution.

One of the most interesting parts of this build is the shaft combination. The cue comes with both a traditional maple shaft and a rare tight-grain Ash shaft. While Ash is widely associated with high-end British snooker cues, it is almost never seen in American custom pool cues at this level. According to Paul, these particular Ash shafts were exceptionally difficult to source due to their unusually tight and straight grain structure.

What makes the Ash shaft especially fascinating is its performance characteristic. Paul described it as playing very similarly to maple, but with added dimensional stability, particularly in high-moisture environments. There is a reason Ash became the standard in England, where humidity and climate conditions demanded a more stable shaft wood over generations of cue making. In many ways, this cue quietly bridges two cue-making traditions: the classic American maple-shaft pool cue and the heritage of British snooker craftsmanship.

This is the kind of cue that may initially appear simple, but collectors and players who understand materials and execution will immediately recognize how uncommon and thoughtfully built it really is.
